Center Director Dan Esty Participates in State Street's ESG Forum

Center Director Professor Dan Esty participated in State Street’s ESG Forum earlier this fall. The forum, held in Boston, brought together experts in ESG investing and explored the challenges and opportunities faced by investors in the era of climate change.

Professor Esty spoke on The Transition to a Low-Carbon World panel. Other panelists included Jay Koh, CEO of The Lightsmith Group; Bridget Realmuto LaPerla, Head of ESG Research at State Street Associates; and Nathalie Wallace, ESG Strategist at State Street Global Advisors. The panelists discussed the current state of climate investing and what new opportunities lie ahead. Ensuring the Integrity of Carbon Offsets with Christie Pollet-Young

Carbon offsets are a widely-used tool in greenhouse gas mitigation efforts. Companies, governments, and other entities can compensate for their emissions by funding equivalent emission reduction efforts elsewhere. In theory, this allows for climate-conscious groups to make up for their hard-to-abate emissions and strive for carbon neutrality. In practice, there is much debate about the integrity of carbon offsets.

The Green New Deal proposal has provided a vision of what a sustainable future in the United States could look like. Introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives in February 2019, the resolution proposes a transformation of the U.S. economy to enact major societal change and actively address climate change. Key among its goals is achieving economy-wide net zero greenhouse gas emissions and establishing millions of high-wage jobs.

The last Sustainable Finance Monthly Seminar of 2018 hosted Adam Zurofsky, Deputy Secretary at the Office of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. The Sustainable Finance Monthly Seminar features leading practitioners and experts in the field of sustainable finance and investing who speak about the challenges and opportunities in the field. The event was co-hosted by the Center, the Yale Center for Business and the Environment, the Yale School of Management Energy Club, and the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies Energy student interest group.

Brad Plumer: A Conversation about Climate and Energy Policy in an Era of Rapid Change

On November 7th, Brad Plumer spoke with Yale students about climate and clean energy policy. Plumer covers climate change, energy policy, and other environmental issues for The New York Times and was previously a senior editor at Vox.com and a reporter at the Washington Post. The event was co-hosted by the Environmental Studies and Energy Studies programs at Yale and sponsored by the Poynter Fellowship in Journalism program.

Election Watch 2018: Political Climate Podcast Discusses Climate and Clean Energy Ballot Initiatives

On Monday, October 29th, the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication hosted the Political Climate podcast. The podcast takes a bipartisan look at climate and clean energy policy and fosters an open dialogue across party lines on politics and the environment.
