The Network for the Digital Economy and the Environment is a collaboration between the Yale School of the Environment, The Environmental Law Institute, and the Center for Law, Energy & the Environment at the University of California, Berkeley which highlights the potential energy and environmental impact that our online footprint creates. The Yale Center for Industrail Ecology’s very own Reid Lifset is one of the lead researchers of the initaitive.

In an interview with The Economist, Center Director Dan Esty, highlights how policy “red lights” must be trasformed to “green lights” that drive innovation with incentives that engage the world’s entrepreneurs, financial markets and creative spirits in the pursuit of a net-zero future. This philosphy is expanded upon and highlighted in the recently released book “A Better Planet: 40 Big Ideas for a Sustainable Future”.

As the nation shifts from a focus on politics to efforts to develop policy, Center Director Dan Esty explores options for new initiatives and progress across the country related to energy, environment, conservation, land use, and other sustainability issues. The discussion built on ideas from the edited book, A Better Planet: 40 Big Ideas for a Sustainable Future.
Center Director Dan Esty appeared as the introductory keynote speaker to the “Measurement Tools for a Regeneration Path” panel discussion, hosted by the alliance Regeneration 20|30. Esty spoke about the importance of business performance measurement tools in the sustainability sector, and the improvements required to better measure the long-term environmental impacts of committed companies.
In an op-ed with Market Watch, Center Director Dan Esty shared that to fight climate change, the U.S. must change the way it thinks about protecting the environment. We need more positive incentives to inspire fresh thinking, spur technology development and channel capital.

Center Director Dan C. Esty joined Cheddar Reveals to discuss the science behind how climate change impacts wildfires, the economic impacts of the wildfires in California and Oregon, and policies both current and future that may help mitigate the prevalence and intensity of these fires.

The Center would like to express our deepest congratulations to Christiana Figueres, an internationally recognized leader on global climate change, who will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree to signal her achievement and immense contribution to environmental and social activism. As executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, she worked across national boundaries and competing interests to galvanize nearly two hundred countries as parties to the Paris Agreement.
In 2016 at an event hosted by the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies Ms. Figueres discussed the urgent new phase necessary in the fight to curb global warming. On April 15, the Yale Business Sustainability Summit marked the 50th anniversary of Earth Day with a virtual discussion that convened CEOs and corporate sustainability thought leaders to discuss the evolving role of business in addressing society’s sustainability challenges.
Dan Esty, Hillhouse Professor of Environmental Law and Policy, and Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, Lester Crown Professor in the Practice of Management and senior associate dean for leadership studies at the Yale School of Management, hosted the event.
