In the seventh installment of the series, Susan Phillips from public radio station WHYY in Philadelphia discussed Marcellus Shale gas development in Pennsylvania. The stories she presented were originally reported by Ms. Phillips and her colleagues as part of StateImpact Pennsylvania, an award-winning collaboration between WHYY, National Public Radio (NPR), and WITF in Harrisburg. The Future of Oil and Gas Production in Colorado, part of the Center's Policy Workshop Seminar Series: Emerging Issues in Shale Gas Development
In the sixth installment of the series, Tom Hunt, the policy programs manager in the Colorado Energy Office, offers a state-policy perspective on the shale gas debate, examining the history, economic impacts, policy responses, and future of oil and natural gas production in Colorado. He focuses on the state-specific ways Colorado has sought to access the economic and energy security benefits of production while honoring the environmental protection and diverse property uses that Colorado citizens hold dear. Interview with NREL Senior Scientist Garvin Heath
Bruce Ho, the Center's Environmental Law & Policy Fellow caught up with Dr. Garvin Heath, a senior scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), to discuss his recently completed research on the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions from shale gas produced from Texas’ Barnett Shale.
Dr. Heath’s research is part of the same Joint Institute for Strategic Energy Analysis (JISEA) report on “Natural Gas and the Transformation of the U.S. Energy Sector: Electricity” that his NREL colleague Jeffrey Logan discussed as part of the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy’s Policy Workshop Webinar Series on Emerging Issues in Shale Gas Development last month. Dr. Heath’s work also provides additional perspective and data on the shale gas-climate change links that Environmental Defense Fund scientist Dr. Ramon Alvarez discussed with our Center in his webinar last fall.

Natural Gas and U.S. Electric Power Futures, part of the Center's Policy Workshop Seminar Series: Emerging Issues in Shale Gas Development
In the fifth installment of our series, Jeffrey Logan, senior energy analyst at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, looks at the shale gas boom's potential to fundamentally alter the evolution of the U.S. power sector. Abundant, low-priced natural gas has already led to over 300 terawatt-hours of fuel switching from coal to natural gas in the existing fleet of combined-cycle generators. Whether this shift continues or reverses itself will depend on the relative price differential between coal and natural gas. Natural gas is also beginning to affect the potential for other power generation options as well. The webinar aired February 12, 2013.

Balancing Environmental, Social, and Economic Impacts of Shale Gas Development Activities, part of the Center's Policy Workshop Seminar Series: Emerging Issues in Shale Gas Development
In the fourth installment of our series, Mark Boling, President of V+ Development Solutions, a division of Southwestern Energy Company, examines the debate surrounding shale gas development, which he says can be best characterized as an emotionally charged, trench warfare that fails to adequately address the real risks. His presentation explores industry’s role in helping to create this mess and discusses what industry can do to refocus the debate by having an open dialogue about the real obstacles to responsible development of this resource and how to develop workable solutions to overcome these obstacles. For Southwestern, this means engaging with environmental groups, regulators and the communities affected by its operations to find solutions effectively balancing the economic, environmental and social impacts of the company's activities. As gas development has expanded, so, too, have questions about the adequacy of its associated legal regime. R. Andreas Kraemer, Director of Ecologic Institute, Berlin, provides his frontline perspective on Germany's nuclear power phase-out and its implications for climate policy. Germany may well be regarded as the nation where the endgame of nuclear power began. The conservative and pro-business German government proposed a law to switch off all nuclear power plants by the end of 2022. Polls indicate that 85 percent of Germans want nuclear power to be phased out within a decade. A clear technical and economic vision of a clean energy future, and a renewed determination for rational energy policies, fuel this demand. The webinar aired October 4, 2011.

Jake Schmidt, international climate policy director at NRDC, provides his frontline perspective on international climate policy. In December 2011 countries will meet in Durban, South Africa, for the next high-level negotiation on climate change (the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties or COP17). This meeting comes as new temperature records are being set, key countries are moving forward with plans to cut their emissions, and the clean energy economy is growing rapidly. Yet, international climate negotiations are struggling to implement the agreements reached in Copenhagen and Cancun. These agreements, if implemented, could lay a critical foundation for international action. The webinar aired September 6, 2011.
